ON MY MORNING WALK: The Heron Project III

Image
ON MY MORNING WALK: The Heron Project III      In the last segment of "The Heron Project" I discovered that there was a baby heron in a nest, high up in a pine tree on "Heron Island" in "Walden."  I returned a day later in the hopes of seeing the little guy again, starting out from home early in the morning but as it turned out I was too early - there were no adult herons at the nest and only a small hump of feathers could be seen in the nest as the baby slept. I returned later in the morning and by then the mother heron had returned... ...and then I saw to my great delight, there was not one scruffy bundle of feathers in the heron nest but two! Baby herons are cute but definitely not pretty! And they were hungry...very hungry and demanding, "Feed me!!!!" They were very active now that the sun was up and warming them, giving me a good view of both of them......

ON MY MORNING WALK: The Heron Project II

Image
ON MY MORNING WALK: The Heron Project II You might recall that back in February, Valentine’s Day to be exact, I had been out photographing the goldeneye and bufflehead ducks that were in abundance, spending their winter at “Walden”; and while photographing these beautiful birds along the pond’s shoreline, I happened to look up to see a male great blue heron overhead in a tree, carefully selecting sticks for a nest. This normally shy, even secretive bird allowed me to get close enough not only to watch him but to photograph him as he went about his business. Eventually, when he had selected several suitable twigs, he gathered them up and flew off across the water to where his mate was waiting, high up in a pine tree on a small island (now referred to as “Heron Island.” For me this was a real treat indeed ― a nesting pair of herons at “Walden” ― and I decided at that very moment that if it was at all possible, I would make photographing these two great birds my project for ...

ON MY MORNING WALK: The Heron Project, Part II

Image
ON MY MORNING WALK: The Heron Project, Part II      For me, Valentine’s Day this year held a special treat. While looking for goldeneye and bufflehead ducks to photograph at “Walden,” I quite by accident met up with a great blue heron, directly above my head, looking for sticks with which to build a nest. (See https://morningwalkphoto.blogspot.com/2018/06/the-heron-project-part-1.html ). I watched him for a long while until he flew off to the top of a tree located on a small island in “Walden,” and his mate, with his load of sticks. I was excited to say the least at what I had seen and was looking forward to photographing them through at least the spring.      But the rest of February and early March were tough, with very cold temperatures and more importantly, several severe storms that brought high winds, toppling trees, and local flooding to the “Walden” area. The beginnings of the nest and indeed the great heron coup...

THE HERON PROJECT: Part 1

Image
THE HERON PROJECT Part 1      It was February 14, Valentine’s Day, and my self-imposed task that morning was to photograph the several goldeneye and bufflehead ducks who had taken up winter residence on “Walden,” the small, private lake behind my home. The weather was cold and overcast, having rained the previous day and night, with the promise of more rain to come; one might say, “Great weather for ducks.” Goldeneyes and their cousins the buffleheads tend to be a little shy and prefer to swim farther from shore than, for example, mallards. In order to get as close as possible, I had to slowly, quietly make my way beneath the trees along the shore.      Even though the early morning light was less than ideal, I took my photos and started to move away from the lake when I was aware of something moving directly above me. I looked up and there was a magnificently large bird, a male great blue heron in the branches of a tree, righ...
